Elementary Education

The Elementary Education major provides a combination of theory, methods and field experience that leads to a teacher certification K-8. The program centers an anti-bias, anti-racist, social justice philosophy.

Special Education Residency (Outreach Program)

The Special Education Residency (Outreach Program) at Western Washington University on the Peninsulas is a 2+2 degree designed for students who have completed an associate's degree or É«»¨ÌÃ's transfer requirements. This compacted program offers a combination of coursework and practical experience, including a year-long internship/residency with highly skilled mentor teachers. Upon completion candidates and are eligible for a Washington State residency teaching certificate in P-12 Special Education.

Education for Inclusive Environments Residency, (Dual Endorsement Outreach Program)

The Education for Inclusive Environments (Dual Endorsement Outreach) program at Western Washington University on the Peninsulas is a 2+2 degree designed for students who have completed an associate's degree or É«»¨ÌÃ's transfer requirements. This program provides students with the skills and experiences to be an instrument of change in their chosen teaching path by combining studies in Special Education and Elementary Education and leads to residency teaching certification with endorsements in Special Education (P-12) and Elementary Education (K-8).

Special Education

The program includes coursework and extensive supervised practicum experiences in the public schools. This program will prepare you to be an excellent teacher in whatever position you eventually choose. Our graduates are actively recruited by school districts to work in a variety of rewarding special education and general education settings.

English Language Learners & Bilingual Education

The Bachelor of Arts in Education: ELL and Bilingual Education major responds to the growing diversity in the state’s schools and the state’s growing focus on dual language education. Currently the major is only offered through Western’s Renton site.

Computer Science — Secondary

If you want to teach computer science, just being knowledgeable in the field isn't enough. This program is designed to provide exposure to the breadth of topics required to satisfy K6-12 students’ curiosity about how computers and technology, now so central to daily life, actually work, and how students can personally leverage the learned knowledge to create their own futures.

Early Childhood Education P-3 Option

The program in early childhood education consists of an academic major in Early Childhood Education and a sequence of professional certification courses that lead to teacher licensure Pre-K through third grade.

Special Education—P-12 Plus Content Endorsement

The Department is proud to offer a dual endorsement program for students who are interested in becoming middle school and high school teachers. Graduates from this unique program will have a teaching credential, a Special Education Endorsement (Preschool through 21 years), and an endorsement in another qualified secondary school level content area.

Inclusive Education (Dual Endorsement Elementary & Special Education)

This dual endorsement program offered through the Department of Special Education and Education Leadership prepares aspiring special education teachers to work with students with disabilities from Preschool through age 21 as well as work as a general education teacher in a regular elementary classroom.

The Elementary Spanish program at Western places a strong emphasis on building a solid grammar and vocabulary base, with an equal emphasis on cultural awareness through culture, film, literature, and linguistics courses to prepare students to teach elementary Spanish.
