Japanese with a Teaching Endorsement

Studying Japanese opens the door to learning firsthand about Japanese society through language, literature, culture, and civilization. The BA in Japanese leads to a BA degree without teacher certification. In order to receive a recommendation for state of Washington certification, students must complete the professional teacher certification program.

German with a Teaching Endorsement

The Bachelor of Arts in German leads to a BA degree without teacher certification. In order to receive a recommendation for state of Washington certification, students must complete the teacher certification program.

Geography/Social Studies

Secondary Education students who wish to be endorsed in Social Studies may choose this major. However, this degree does not require that a student pursue a teaching certificate. Geography/Social Studies majors interested in Secondary certification must apply separately to the certification programs, such as those in Woodring College of Education.

French with a Teaching Endorsement Option

The study of French includes instruction in language, literature, linguistics, and culture. The BA in French leads to a BA degree without teacher certification. In order to receive a recommendation for state of Washington certification, students must complete the professional teacher certification program.

Economics/Social Studies

This major is open to any student who desires to study Economics and a variety of other social sciences, but it is specifically designed for students who wish to pursue a career in teaching. Secondary Education students who wish to be endorsed in Social Studies may choose this major, however, you are not required to pursue a teaching certificate.

Earth Science — Secondary

Earth Science, or geoscience, is a diverse discipline, incorporating aspects of physics, chemistry, biology, and natural history in the attempt to solve earth-related problems. Want to teach Earth science and geoscience to middle or high school students? This degree leads to teaching endorsement in Earth & Space Science.

Earth Science/General Science — Secondary

Do you like to know why and how things work? Do you enjoy the outdoors? Are you concerned about the environment? Want to teach Earth science and other sciences to middle or high school students? This degree leads to recommendations for teaching endorsements in Earth & Space Science and Science.

Chinese Language and Culture with a Teaching Endorsement

The study of Chinese Language and Culture focuses on communicative skills and cultural awareness. With the addition of a teaching endorsement, this program prepares students to become successful language teachers at the secondary education level.

Western's programs in Secondary Education are designed to prepare thoughtful, knowledgeable, and effective middle and secondary school teachers for a diverse society. Learning to teach Chemistry and Physics occurs through a variety of means: the study of a wide range of chemistry and physics, an extended internship, and continual experiences as a student, learner, and problem solver.

Chemistry/Mathematics — Secondary

As a prospective teacher, Western encourages students to focus on expanding their personal understanding of Chemistry and Mathematics and to capitalize on opportunities to work with pre-college students as a tutor, classroom assistant, practicum student, and a novice teacher in their internship.
