Computer Science — Secondary

If you want to teach computer science, just being knowledgeable in the field isn't enough. This program is designed to provide exposure to the breadth of topics required to satisfy K6-12 students’ curiosity about how computers and technology, now so central to daily life, actually work, and how students can personally leverage the learned knowledge to create their own futures.

English — ELL/Bilingual Education Emphasis

This major is unique in that it leads students toward multiple endorsements – a Qualifying Endorsement in English Language Arts (Secondary) and an Additional Endorsement in ELL and/or Bilingual Education (P-12). Nine additional credits of ELL/Bilingual coursework must be taken beyond the major to complete all requirements for either of those endorsements.

English — Creative Writing Emphasis

This major leads to a baccalaureate degree without teacher certification. To receive a recommendation for teacher certification with an English Language Arts endorsement, students must also complete the teacher certification program offered by the Department of Secondary Education.

English — Literature Emphasis

This major leads to a baccalaureate degree without teacher certification. To receive a recommendation for teacher certification with an English Language Arts endorsement, students must also complete the teacher certification program offered by the Department of Secondary Education.

Spanish with a Teaching Endorsement

The Bachelor of Arts in Spanish leads to a BA degree without teacher certification. In order to receive a recommendation for state of Washington certification, students must complete the teacher certification program. Please see the Department of Secondary Education for program admission, completion, and teacher certification requirements.

Secondary Education

The Secondary Education program is designed for students who want to become teachers at the middle or high school level and leads to a recommendation to the State of Washington for a teaching certificate with an endorsement in at least one subject area.

Political Science/Social Studies

Secondary Education students who wish to be endorsed in Social Studies may choose this major. However, the Political Science/Social Studies degree does not require that a student pursue a teaching certificate.

Physics/ Mathematics — Secondary Education

This program offers formal clinical preparation in education, an extended internship, and continual experiences as a student, learner, and problem solver in mathematics and physics. Combined with the professional preparation program in secondary education, this degree prepares students to teach mathematics and physics for middle and high school.

Physical Education and Health P-12

This program provides concentrated study of Physical and Health Education. The Physical Education and Health P-12 major leads to an endorsement in Health and Fitness and must be accompanied by the Secondary Education Professional Program offered through Western's Woodring College of Education.

Mathematics — Secondary Education

Learning to teach mathematics occurs through a variety of means: the study of a wide variety of mathematics, pedagogical preparation within a mathematical context, formal clinical preparation in education, an extended internship, and continual experiences as a student, learner, and problem solver. This major must be accompanied by the professional preparation program in Secondary Education.
